Vitamin D and Cancer Prevention: Shining Light on the Current Research
Friday, December 02, 2011
12:00 – 1:30 pm EST
12:00 – 1:30 pm EST
Objectives
- Discuss and analyze the scientific evidence regarding the new dietary guidelines for vitamin D in terms of recommended dietary allowances, tolerable upper intake levels, and corresponding serum 25(OH)D levels
- Identify strengths and weaknesses of clinical data relating to vitamin D and cancer prevention
- Discuss and analyze the biological basis by which vitamin D inadequacy or excess influences cancer risk
Vitamin D is increasingly recognized to have multiple physiological roles beyond its function in bone health. Emerging evidence suggests that higher vitamin D exposures may reduce risk of certain cancers in some populations, but can possibly increase risk in others. We will discuss current nutritional guidelines, strength of current research, and some potential mechanisms by which vitamin D may influence cancer risk.
